How to read this table: "Unverified" means the launch research did not supply a fully verified item-by-item acceptance matrix for that program. It does not mean the program accepts or refuses an item. Always confirm with the local program.

Practical guides to donating household items

Understand how pickup programs work, prepare your donations, and keep appropriate records.

01

How free donation pickup works

Free pickup can be a convenient way to donate furniture and household goods, but the word free does not mean every item or address qualifies.

1. Find a program that serves your area

Start with a charity's official pickup program. Some organizations operate national programs while others rely on independent local branches or regional partners. A national listing alone does not confirm service at your address.

2. Check what the organization accepts

Donation programs need items that fit their operational capacity and charitable or resale purposes. Acceptance can depend on condition, demand, available storage and the local collection route.

Ask specifically about the item you want collected. Do not assume that accepting furniture means accepting mattresses, large appliances, electronics or oversized specialty items.

3. Ask about minimum quantities and restrictions

Some programs may have collection requirements or limits. The research used for this directory does not establish a universal minimum quantity across the listed organizations. Ask the local program whether it requires multiple items, a minimum items or a specific type of donation.

4. Arrange collection directly

Use the charity's official scheduling page or local branch contact route. Salvation Army scheduling is available through its official website. Other programs use their own local or regional arrangements.

Ask about available dates, collection location, curbside requirements, access restrictions and whether someone must be present.

5. Prepare for collection

Clean and organize items, separate donations from household trash, and follow the charity's instructions for placement. Do not leave donations outdoors before receiving confirmation.

Why a free pickup might not happen

  • Your address may be outside the local pickup territory.
  • The branch may have suspended collections or reached capacity.
  • Your items may not meet its acceptance requirements.
  • The collection route may not accommodate oversized or difficult-to-move items.
  • The charity may decline an item when the driver arrives.
Remember: Free pickup is conditional on local availability, item acceptance and collection capacity. A confirmed appointment is not necessarily a guarantee that every item will be taken.

Preparing donations + tax deduction basics

A little preparation protects your donation, the driver, and your records.

Clean, sort and photograph

Clean items, remove personal belongings, and keep like items together. Photograph larger items and keep a simple inventory list with descriptions and approximate condition.

Check condition honestly

Donate items that are clean, working (where applicable) and safe to reuse. Broken, stained, unsafe or recalled items are commonly unsuitable, but final acceptance is always the local program's decision.

Prepare the pickup area

Clear a path, measure doorways and stairways for large furniture, and tell the program about access limits, parking, and whether items are upstairs or in a basement.

Tax receipts and deduction basics

Ask the collecting charity what receipt it provides and what information it records. Keep the receipt, your inventory list, and any photos with your tax records. Deduction rules depend on your tax situation, the type of property, and current tax law.

Not tax advice: This guide is general information only and is not tax advice. Tax rules are individual and can change. Consult a qualified tax professional about your situation before claiming a deduction.

About Donation Pickup Guide

Donation Pickup Guide is an independent informational directory. It compares free donation pickup programs so households can start with a clearer picture of what to ask a local program, rather than assuming every charity accepts every item.

We do not arrange pickups, accept donations, or speak for any listed charity. All scheduling and acceptance decisions are made by the charity's local program.

How we evaluate pickup information

Accuracy matters more than filling every cell in a comparison table.

Official program sources

Research identifies national program websites and local branch pages as the appropriate sources for acceptance and scheduling information.

Local rules take priority

National program descriptions cannot establish that an individual branch is collecting donations in a particular ZIP code.

Unknown means unknown

We do not turn missing information into assumed acceptance policies, minimum quantities or collection timelines.

Source limitation: The launch research identifies Salvation Army, Habitat ReStore, Pickup Please, GreenDrop, AMVETS, Goodwill, The Arc and Furniture Bank Network as relevant program sources. It does not supply a fully verified item-by-item acceptance matrix, minimum donation quantities or a verified national scheduling lead time for each. Those fields remain explicitly unconfirmed.
